New jobs for estate caretakers PDF Print E-mail

A WEAR Valley housing company is improving its service by expanding its estate caretakers scheme.

Dale & Valley Homes already employs two caretakers, who work across the former Wear Valley district to improve the look of council estates.

By bringing in a new supervisor, an extra community caretaker and two apprentices the company anticipates helping more vulnerable tenants to improve the look of their homes by mending fences, keeping on top of their gardens and doing other minor work which make estates look cared for and well-maintained.

Pat Wanless, director of housing operations, said: "Since we introduced the caretaker scheme it has been really appreciated by our customers, especially those who are older or disabled.

"Some more able residents struggle to afford specialist equipment rather than to actually do the work. In those cases the caretakers will help them out and the residents do their bit too.

"Our caretakers really make a difference to the way people feel about the areas they live in, which helps combat anti-social behaviour and improve life for everyone.

"By taking on these four new people we will be able to do more of this valuable work, create new jobs for this area and train two young people, giving them valuable skills for the future."

Dale & Valley has been working with Jobcentre Plus to find suitable candidates for the jobs, particularly the long-term unemployed, and with East Durham and Houghall Community College to set up the apprenticeship scheme. Contact Jobseeker Direct on 0845-6060234

YOUNG people Wear Valley are being offered the chance to join in free life skills classes to help them find work or set up their own home.

Anyone aged 16 to 25 can sign up for the one day courses and go home with a piece of furniture they built themselves.

The courses, which run until October, started last year after council house management company Dale & Valley Homes received funding from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

Students begin by building a piece of flat pack furniture, under supervision from joiners from property services firm Gentoo.

They then go on to practise interview skills, learn about which jobs are available locally and are given help with opening bank accounts.

WALKERS can share all the sights, sounds and scents of spring in the North Pennines on a free guided walk this week.

The North Pennines AONB Partnership is hosting a springtime guided walk on Friday (April 17), following the Weardale Way from Ireshopeburn to Westgate, County Durham.

The event is part of Visit Durham’s Outdoor and Active Week, which is co-ordinated by the County Durham Tourism Partnership.

Led by Simon Wilson, area co-ordinator for the North Pennines AONB Partnership, the walk will trace the history, life and nature of the North Pennine dales.

Mr Wilson said: "Weardale has an incredibly intricate history and much of the way the Dale looks and its natural beauty is a legacy of that history and the work of the people who live here now. The lambing period is an ideal time to visit Weardale as it bursts back to life after the winter."

The route is classed as moderately difficult, with some stiles and uneven surfaces and walkers should wear outdoor clothing and boots.

Bus fare from the meeting place at Westgate to Ireshopeburn and refreshments are included as part of the free event.

Meet at 10am at Westgate to catch a bus to Ireshopeburn to start the walk back down Weardale.

Places are limited. Call 0191-383-7421 to book a place or for further information.
